Vision Screening
Why is school vision screening necessary?
Children are often unaware they have a vision problem. Parents and teachers can miss problems that are not observable. Children often have adjusted to the way they see and have never experienced what it is like to see what others see. Uncorrected vision can decrease your child's ability to learn. Children whose vision problems are corrected usually show improvement in classroom learning.
Vision screening does not diagnose a problem but simply raises a "red flag" letting you as a parent know that an exam by an eye care professional is necessary for a complete evaluation with possible diagnosis and treatment.
The School District of Cudahy has teamed up with the Cudahy Lions club and Prevent Blindness Wisconsin to provide vision screening for your children.
The School District and the Cudahy Lions club ensure we have the best equipment and training available. All screeners are certified by Prevent Blindness and Prevent Blindness protocols are followed for the actual screening.
What to Know for the Vision Screening Process
Cudahy School's Health Service Staff along with Cudahy Lions Club provides vision screening for all students in grades K4, K5, 1st, 5th, 7th, the Early Childhood Program, and any student if a concern is identified, in the fall.
Parents/guardians will receive a reminder of the vision screening date. Children who wear glasses need to wear their glasses the day of the screening.
Parents are notified by email that the vision results have been entered in Skyward and parents can access their child's vision results by logging into Family Access. Results will either indicate Pass or Fail.
Parents/guardians of children who "Did Not Pass" the screening should schedule an exam by an eye care professional for their child.
Vision screening can also be done at any other time for all students if there is an identified concern by the parent/guardian, student, or District Staff by contacting the District Nurse.

State of Wisconsin (Statue 118.135)
The State of Wisconsin encourages parents of Kindergartners to arrange for their child's eyes to be examined by an optometrist or evaluated by a medical provider by December 31 of the child's first year in school.
The State of Wisconsin provides a "Kindergarten Eye Health Examination Report" that includes the minimum elements of the eye examination, a section for "Findings", indicate if Follow up is needed, and a place for date of exam and signature of provider. The State encourages parents/guardians to share a copy of the results with the school.
