From Cudahy Graduate to Trailblazing Tradeswoman:
Amanda Galewski's Remarkable Journey
Amanda Galewski is the embodiment of what it means to be a Cudahy graduate. She graduated in 2020 and as the world was closing down, her future was opening up to boundless possibilities.
Guided by her father, a skilled woodworker, Amanda enrolled in Woods 1-4 during her time at Cudahy High School. She initially thought she would pursue a career in carpentry and cabinetry work because she had a deep love for building and creating - and she was good at it. She also took Engineering 1-3 and discovered her aptitude for the Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses that Cudahy High School had to offer. However, it was during her senior year that her life’s trajectory took a turn.
In Metals 2, Amanda found her passion for welding and using the plasma cutter, and she exhibited a natural talent for it. Her exceptional skills caught the attention of Mr. Tom Backes, known for his knack for connecting hardworking and skilled students with apprenticeships and internships throughout the state. During the College and Career Fair in her senior year, Mr. Backes introduced her to a representative from Krones, Inc. Thanks to Mr. Backes’ endorsement and Amanda’s impressive resume, she received an email inviting her to apply for Krones, Inc. in just an hour.
Since leaving Cudahy High School, Amanda’s career journey has been nothing short of incredible. She continues to work at Krones, Inc., and in a mere three years, she has become a Journeyman Maintenance Technician. Her certifications extended beyond the United States; she’s also certified in Germany. This makes her highly sought after, a highly skilled professional and a true leader in her field. Amanda made history as the first female to complete the ICATT Apprensticeship Program at Krones, Inc. and is one of only a handful of females who work there. These accomplishments are especially remarkable in a field where women are typically underrepresented.
Amanda attributes much of her success to Mr. Backes, who provided her with crucial guidance and support. She is grateful for his belief in her and the high regard in which he held her during the college fair three years ago. Mr. Backes played a significant role in encouraging Amanda to pursue her dreams, and she holds him in high esteem for his dedication to his students and his commitment to connect them with internships and apprenticeships throughout Wisconsin. Amanda eagerly anticipates the annual meeting with Mr. Backes when he introduces new prospective students to Krones, Inc.
The opportunities available at Cudahy High School have the potential to inspire and transform the lives of students, as they did for Amanda. May she serve as an inspiration to the entire Cudahy community, but especially to young women who are ready to embark on a career in the trades.
